Portfolio Accounting Manager

About the Role
Talus Group Holdings is a private equity firm that acquires and builds service-sector businesses. Our Accounting & Audit Support function embeds directly into portfolio companies post-acquisition to build financial infrastructure, maintain books, and prepare operations for a permanent accounting team. This is a hands-on, high-variety role that will expose you to the full arc of a PE-backed company's early financial life.
The Portfolio Accounting Manager will work directly under the Senior Director of Accounting & Audit, supporting active portfolio company embeds across bookkeeping, month-end close, and controller-level accounting. You will be a key contributor from day one, managing day-to-day accounting operations for multiple entities simultaneously while helping build the processes and systems that outlast the embed.
What You'll Do
- Maintain accurate books for 2-4 portfolio companies at a time, spanning industries including facilities services, outdoor recreation, food distribution, and other services verticals
- Own the month-end close process for assigned entities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation
- Support GAAP compliance and technical accounting application under ASC guidance relevant to acquisition accounting, revenue recognition, and operating company reporting
- Assist in building and documenting accounting processes, internal controls, and chart of account structures at newly acquired companies
- Prepare workpapers and support materials for annual audits and lender reporting
- Work across accounting platforms including QuickBooks Online and other cloud-based tools as required by each portfolio company
- Coordinate with portfolio company operators, external accountants, and auditors as directed
- Support offboarding processes when a portfolio company transitions to its own Controller or accounting team
What We're Looking For
- 3-5 years of accounting experience, with a mix of bookkeeping and controller-level work
- Strong command of GAAP; experience with acquisition accounting or PE-backed companies is a plus
- Comfort working across multiple entities and switching context frequently
- Experience with QuickBooks Online or similar small-business accounting platforms
- High attention to detail and a self-starter mindset; this role requires someone who can operate with limited hand-holding once oriented
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA or CPA-track preferred but not required
- Ability to work in a fast-moving environment where processes are often being built, not inherited
What Makes This Role Unique
- Broad exposure across industries and company lifecycles that most mid-level accountants don't see until they're much further along
- Direct mentorship from a Senior Director of Accounting & Audit with deep PE platform experience
- Opportunity to build, not just maintain, giving you a portfolio of work product you genuinely own
- No two months look the same
